Be A Servant
By Melody
Are you stressed out, tired of working for your family, and ready for
a break? But wait! This could be the chance that God is giving you to practice
and experience the blessings of servanthood!
Many of you come from large families, so I am sure that you have plenty
of chances to be a servant, but, even with all the chances we have, do
you and I always jump to our feet when they come along?
Matthew 23:11 says, “But he that is greatest among you shall be your
servant.” Yet how hard it is to be one! We, in our sinful nature, naturally
have the tendency to want to be served instead of doing the serving ourselves.
Example: “Melody, will you get me a drink of water?”
“Not now Harmony. I’m too busy at the moment. You’re a big girl; why
don’t you get one yourself?”
See, right there I messed up. Didn’t I? I passed up something that
would have been a blessing to both her and myself... While helping Harmony,
not only would I be practicing servanthood, but I would also be setting
an example for her to follow. What should I have said?”
“Of course Harmony! Come to the kitchen with me and I will get you
a glass of ice water.”
Even Christ who is our example, was a servant. Consider these verses
in Philippians 2:5-8... “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ
Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal
with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form
of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men; And being found in fashion
as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the
death of the cross.”
Let us all remember to be like Jesus was (and still is!) in this way
and in every way!

Oh, To Be A Servant!
If I could only be a servant, Lord!
How happy I know I’d be...
For serving and helping others always puts,
A peace inside of me.
But oh, how hard it always seems for me,
To serve when it gets down to it...
When I’m required to put forth effort,
And the things I’m doing, to quit.
It’s our nature to sit back easy awhile,
And to want to command others.
What a blessing it would be to my family,
If I served my sisters and brothers...
Oh God, please make me your servant now..
Give me Your spirit of love.
And please let your great glory shine through me,
By the blessings of servanthood!
