The Wonders
of the Lord God
By Katie Pierri
Job 26:7-11,14 “‘He stretches out the north over empty space, and hangs
the earth on nothing. He wraps up the waters in His clouds; and the cloud
does not burst under them. He obscures the face of the full moon, and spreads
His cloud over it. He has inscribed a circle on the surface of the waters,
at the boundary of light and darkness. The pillars of heaven tremble, and
are amazed at His rebuke...... Behold, these are the fringes of His ways;
and how faint a word we hear of Him! But His mighty thunder, who can understand?’”
What words to describe God! How very insignificant and weak we feel
next to this awesome and holy Lord, who has created all heaven and earth,
and only by His mighty hand preserves them. Surely we are awed at the parting
of the Red Sea, the demise of Jericho, the life, death, and resurrection
of Jesus Christ, but it is in words like these, sounding together like
a majestic trumpet, that we see a great picture of the wonder and the power
and the splendor of Jehovah, Almighty, the God of all heaven and earth.
Yet we are told, “‘these are the fringes of His ways’”, ways so above
our mortal minds that human language is powerless to depict Him in His
full glory.
“‘Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth! Tell Me if
you have understanding, who set its measurements, since you know! Or who
stretched the line on it? On what were its bases sunk? Or who laid its
cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of
God shouted for joy?’” (Job 38:4-7)
“‘ Have you ever in your life commanded the morning, and caused the
dawn to know its place;..... Have you entered into the springs of the sea?
Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep? have the gates of death
been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of deep darkness? Have
you understood the expanse of the earth? Tell Me, if you know all this.’”
(Job 38:12, 16-18) In the Lord’s own words, we are shown to be nothing,
absolutely nothing, in the presence of the King of Kings.
How overwhelming are these verses, how we marvel at their passion and
strength, how completely we are humbled at their expression of the incomprehensible
power of the God of Hosts. “He looks at the earth, and it trembles; He
touches the mountains, and they smoke.” (Ps 104:32)
Truly we must say, “Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, Thou
art very great; Thou art clothed with splendor and majesty.... O Lord,
how many are Thy works! In wisdom Thou has made them all; the earth is
full of Thy possessions... I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I
will sing praise to my God while I have my being... Let sinners be consumed
from the earth, and let the wicked be no more. Bless the Lord, O my soul.
Praise the Lord!” (Psalm 104:1,24,33,35) <>
