The Journals of
Corrie Belle & Hollister
By Michael Phillips
I cannot begin to recommend this series of 8+ books highly enough.
Michael Phillip’s books are like gold wrapped in tin foil as the publisher
seems compelled to wrap Mr. Phillip’s stories in less than desirable covers
at times - for marketing reasons, I assume.
The journals follow Corrie through her trip west with her mother and
siblings, and through her marriage some six books later. You will learn
much of the civil war and the settlement of the west. And although Corrie
is one of the first woman newspaper reporters, her marriage takes place
only after her bride-groom is to be is approved of after a year long trial
by her father.
What I like most is that Phillip’s characters are not worldly ones
that go to church or say prayers. People get saved. The redeemed grow in
areas of obedience. The spiritual lessons are alive and often applicable
to my life today. This is one set of books I look forward to re-reading
and sharing with my children as they grow up. The publishers are: Bethany

The Quilt
By T. Davis Bunn
A really good book that I recently read was called, “The Quilt,” and
is written by T. Davis Bunn. The book is about Mary, an elderly woman living
in a small town. As a compassionate woman, Mary is known by all for her
listening ear and wise answers. As Mary grows old and nearer life’s end,
she feels God’s calling to do one last thing. This calling is to make a
quilt. With her feeble hands twisted by arthritis, this hardly seems reasonable!
But, pushing aside the protests of family and friends, she begins this
special quilt. Special, because the elderly woman insists that every stitch
must be sewn with a prayer — of thanks. None involved in this special project
end out the same. Definitely worthy reading!

Beautiful Girlhood
Revised by Karen Andreola
Beautiful Girlhood is an excellent book for any teenage girl. This
205 page long book is full of information on Godly Behavior concerning
dress, character, obedience and a great many other things. It is a wonderful
guidebook on which on which to refer to. I would recommend it to any girl.

Hind’s Feet on
High Places
By Hannah Hurnard
“The Lord God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hind’s
feet, and he will make me walk upon mine high places.” Habakkuk 3:19
This is the heart of the book “Hind’s Feet on High Places.” It is the
very moving allegorical account of the author’s own journey to intimate
fellowship with God.
The story begins when MuchAfraid, a crippled, malformed, incommensurate
young shepherdess seeks to have the Chief Shepherd plant the seed of love
within her heart, enabling her to begin a journey to the High Places. The
Shepherd, knowing her fully, then chooses for her the two companions best
able to assist her on her way - Sorrow and Suffering.
Written on the author’s beloved Swiss Alps, this book dramatizes the
seemingly impossible paths which develop hind’s feet - the Great Precipice
Injury, the Forests of Danger and Tribulation and finally, ultimately,
the Grave on the Mountain.
But even as “weeping endureth for a night” yet “joy cometh in the morning.”
(Psalm 30:5) You will rejoice as Much Afraid is transformed to Grace and
Glory, Sorrow to Joy, and Suffering into Peace. You will learn with her
the ultimate joy of trusting in the absolute wisdom of God. And you will
share with her the ecstasy of their hind’s feet, blissfully leaping alongside
the Shepherd.

The Ellie’s People
Series
By Mary Christner Borntrager
The one series that I have found which really gave me a good view about
the Amish, is the Ellie’s People Series. The author starts in the first
book called ELLIE. She writes about Ellie’s life from when she is eight,
through her growing up years, her “courtship” and marriage, and her first
few children. The other books in the series are: REBECCA, RACHEL, DANIEL,
REUBEN, ANDY, POLLY and SARAH. Some are about Ellie’s children and grandchildren;
all give a wonderful look into the life of the Amish. It made me really
appreciate them and made me see that the Amish children are just like other
children in that they like to play, read and don’t always have to be silent.
I have been unable to buy these books in any catalogue, but ordered
the only one I have, ELLIE, through a book distributor in Wisconsin. I
have borrowed the books REBECCA, RACHEL, and SARAH from a friend, but don’t
know where she obtained them. You might try to buy these through a local
bookstore.
